Universities are some of the most interesting marketing clients I have worked with, because they combine a strong product, a long decision cycle, and marketing habits formed in a world that no longer exists. Through Talentdu, growing enrollment for academic institutions across MENA is now a core part of what my company does. Here is what the work has taught me.
The decision no longer starts at the open day
A prospective student, or the professional considering an executive program, does most of the deciding silently: search, social, rankings pages, one or two people they trust, and increasingly an AI assistant summarising the options. By the time they attend your event or fill your form, the shortlist already exists. Marketing that begins at the enquiry stage is marketing that begins after the decision.
The practical consequence: a university's public content, program pages and search presence are not communications assets. They are admissions infrastructure.
Why brand campaigns fail admissions teams
The classic university campaign sells the institution: heritage, campus, values. It wins awards and moves almost no applications, because nobody enrolls in a brand. They enroll in a program, at a price, leading to an outcome. The campaigns that move numbers are program-level: this degree, this schedule, this career result, this deadline. Brand does matter, but as the floor under those campaigns, not as the campaign itself.
The funnel, honestly
Enrollment is a funnel with a long memory, and each stage fails differently.
Demand capture first. People already searching for your programs, or programs like yours, are the cheapest enrollments you will ever get. Most institutions lose them with program pages that bury the three questions every applicant has: what will I learn, what will it cost, what happens after.
Nurture like you mean it. The gap between enquiry and application is weeks or months. An enquiry that receives one brochure and silence was bought and discarded. The institutions that win treat that gap as a designed journey: useful content, real answers, human contact at the right moments.
Speed is a strategy. Response time to an enquiry predicts conversion better than almost anything else in the funnel. This is the least glamorous finding in education marketing and the most reliably profitable one.
What a growth partnership actually is
The model we run at Talentdu pairs the institution's academic strength with an operating partner who owns the growth machinery: positioning, program pages, campaigns, funnel, follow-up, reporting. The university stays the academic authority. The partner carries the commercial engine, with targets attached.
It works for a reason that is almost uncomfortable to say aloud: enrollment growth is an operations discipline, and academic institutions are not built to run commercial operations. Partnering is faster than building, and accountability sits with someone measured on the number.
If you run admissions or continuing education and this is the problem on your desk, this is exactly the conversation to have with me.
